Weight Loss – 6 Tips for People Who Hate to Exercise

Even if you enjoy exercise, it can get boring after awhile. Other times you may have a hard time getting going after an injury, or a long vacation. Or, maybe you’ve never been able to start and maintain an exercise program. Here are a few proven tips that can help you learn to enjoy exercise.

1.Make exercise part of your daily or weekly routine. Schedule lunch dates, like a specific time to walk with a co-worker. Set up a good time to walk the dog every-day, or make plans to meet your spouse or a good friend two or three times a week at the gym.

2.Think of the most fun thing you can do to move your body. Rather than calling it exercise, think of it as play time. Do you like to dance, swim, bike-ride, garden, lift weights, play with your cat or dog–then do that. Let’s say you love to dance buy you feel too fat to go to a dance class or too uncomfortable to go to a dance club by yourself. Crank up music at home and dance like a manic in your basement. Eventually, you feel a little better about your body and may decide to try a new class or club on your own.

3.Mix it up. I can get easily bored with exercise, but there are many things I enjoy doing. You might want to try yoga on Monday, rollerblading on Tuesday, water aerobics on Wednesday, Ti Chi on Thursday, a short walk with a friend on Friday, a long bike ride on Saturday, and leave Sunday wide open.

4.It helps to have a specific time set aside for exercise. Once you have it in your brain that you’re going to exercise at certain times throughout the week, it’s easier to schedule around that time. Let’s say you and your spouse decide to work out Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6pm. If anyone asks you to get together at that time, you immediately know you are not available.

5.Exercise at approximately the same time almost every day. For example, if you are a morning person, you might want to take a vigorous walk first thing every day. If you get bored at work, it might be nice to have a lunch time work-out buddy. If you’re a night owl, you might want to pick out two or three weekly activities you can do right after dinner.

6.Stick with what works. Most of us look for fast and easy solutions to weight-loss. If you enjoy taking a daily walk more than hour at the gym, stick with your walking regime. If you need to step up your pace in order to maximize the benefits of walking then do so, but don’t change what’s working. Once your walking routine is stable, you might want to add a few at home exercises for upper body strength.

A lot of people assume fat people are unhealthy and thin people are fit. This is untrue. According to numerous studies, the best way to remain healthy is through exercise. However, weight-loss can occur when regular exercise becomes part of a lifestyle change. Think of exercise as playtime. The more you play, the more comfortable you’ll feel and the more likely you are to try new things and enjoy life to the fullest.
