Begin to partner with them immediately. Many times I hear dentists say they will not let the patients run the practice. While it’s good to have appointment guidelines, don’t become so rigid that patients are treated like mass produced objects. A patient who always walks in without an appointment demanding a denture adjustment is different than a patient who walks in without an appointment, but in obvious distress. Patients in pain deserve priority. At that point it should not matter if they let a diagnosed condition persist to the point of pain. At that point all that matters is alleviating the pain. Build time into the schedule so that the unexpected doesn’t become a schedule breaker.
