How to Use a Nebulizer

A nebulizer is an essential piece of medical equipment which can help a person suffering from asthma to control the symptoms of the disease. Not only are nebulizers simple to use but they are also extremely easy to clean. However in this particular article we will be taking a look at how to use a nebulizer.

Many nebulizers such as the CompMist Compressor Nebulizer contain an air compressor which then allows the liquid medication to be dispersed to the patient through a fine mist. This is one of the most effective and quickest ways of administering medication to asthma patients as it gains access to their lungs much more quickly. By doing this the airways will actually expand a lot more and this makes the patient feel that they are able to breathe a lot easier.

The first thing a person will need to do is ensure that they have all the required components. A nebulizer is made up of a compressor, tube, cup, as well as a mask or mouthpiece. Plus they will also need the medication prescribed by their doctor and this will then need to be administered according to the instructions provided to them.

Next they will need to ensure that the compressor has been placed on a level service which is close to an electrical point. However some of the more modern nebulizers come with a battery which now makes them much lighter and smaller to handle.

Once the compressor is in place you will need to pour the correct amount of medication (prescribed by the doctor) in to the cup and this needs to be attached to the mask or mouthpiece. Many doctors advocate using masks on small children and infants as it covers both the mouth and nose and will ensure that sufficient amounts of medication are dispersed into the child’s lungs.

Now that you have attached the cup to the mask or mouthpiece you now need to attach the tube to both the cup and the compressor. You should now turn on the machine and almost immediately you see a thin mist appearing in the mask or mouthpiece and it is now time to put these in place. You should keep the machine on until the medication has completely gone from the cup and this will take around 10 minutes however more modern nebulizers such as the CompMist Compressor Nebulizer now only take around 5 minutes for the course of treatment to be completed.

As soon as all the medication has gone you should remove the mouthpiece of mask and turn the machine off.

The finally stage on how to use a nebulizer is to clean it after use and this we will discuss in another article.
