Effective Treatments Depression Medications

There are degrees or levels of depression from very mild to moderate levels, and from a moderate level to a severe depressive level of symptoms. As a result, there is a variety in the intensity of the treatment protocol that is used. In many cases a multi-modal approach is made.

For example, one might be on a medication and also take part in psychotherapy. More severe cases may require hospitalization and more intense treatment. This may include medication. We are going to look at three basic levels of depression as already mentioned; mild, moderate, and severe depression and also depression medications.

Mild depression does not generally last long, maybe a couple of weeks or months and may not even need treatment. Much beyond that though, it could be a depressive order and treatment may be required. Talking to your doctor could help you to sort out what’s going on. Medication could be required if only for a short time.

Moderate depression is of a longer duration and typically will respond to counseling (psychotherapy=talk therapy). Medications are often used and prove one of a few effective treatments depression medications.

Depression that is severe can last years even a lifetime. Specialized psychotherapy, medications, and other treatments such as ECT-Electroconvulsive Therapy are used in the most severe of cases. Hospitalization with comprehensive treatments may also be necessary.

There are three basic types of medication that are used to treat depression. Which medications you are given is dependant on the depth and duration of your depression. Most people respond well to treatment with medication, however, that is not always the best choice, and on top of this, we have learnt that many of these anti-depressant drugs can have terrible side effects. Remember to explore all options; in particular, try to look for natural formulas that can enhance health and well-being.

Trycyclic antidepressants affect the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. Typically they are not the first choice for treatment. This is due to the serious side effects which can include suicidal ideation. MAOIs – Monomine Oxidase Inhibitors are used most often with those who have not responded to other treatments. They have proven beneficial in other mental illnesses as well. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors changes the levels of serotonin in the brain.

There are new medications and treatments being discovered all the time. Your physician will be able to help guide you to the right one. Do not be adverse to medications – they can make a world of difference in your life. Once you start feeling better, it is advised that you continue taking the medication(s) until your doctor approves it. Be sure to follow the directions exactly for the best results.
