Exercise and Osteoporosis Prevention
Q. I am a 55 year old woman who is really concerned about osteoporosis as my own mother suffered from it. What help and advice can you give on exercise and osteoporosis?
A.
Osteoporosis is a real concern for many women and is defined as when bone mass is reduced to the point that a fracture can occur with greater ease than usual, such as from a fall to the ground. Typical sites of fractures are the wrist, hip, and spine and it is estimated that one in three women will sustain an osteoporotic fracture at some time in her life.
After the age of about 35, we all start to lose a small amount of bone mass each year. This reduction in bone mass is known as osteopenia and can be affected by a wide range of different factors such as smoking, drinking, low calcium intake, and a lack of physical activity – all very common among many young women – that accelerate the loss of bone mass. However, the main reason that women are at greater risk than men is the lack of estrogen post-menopause. This loss of an important hormone in the body can accelerate bone mass reduction by 5 years.
Anti Wrinkle Cream: Our Miracle Treatment or Myth?
What’s wrong with a few winkles anyway? A well lined lady I used to work with often said that a few wrinkles not only add a bit of character to your mug, but they help the face to express itself better. Well, sorry Ruth, but I’d sooner have a face that’s as hard and as smooth as brittle plastic, than turn out like my grandfather. He had so many lines on his face that it resembled a road map of London. In fact neither the woman nor the men on either side of my family seem so age too well. Another reason why I want to get a good anti wrinkle cream working into my skin before it’s too late.
Super Muscle Growth Without The Pills
Let me tell you a little scientific secret. You can gain muscle without popping the latest fad supplements. Don’t be shocked…let me give you a scenario. You are looking at increasing muscle mass and strength, so you sign up for a $100 per month gym membership. You then feel that you can’t get fit without a little push, so you hire a personal trainer who locks you into a 12 week agreement at an upfront cost of say $600 dollars. After a few weeks, you feel that the trainer was unreliable, because instead of helping you squat a 1000-pound bench press, which almost cost your life, he was busy talking to a cute girl on the treadmill. Now here is the tricky bit. Because you signed up with the personal trainer, the gym he works for has included a little bonus if he can up sell you the latest, cutting edge supplements.
Will Lasers Replace Traditional Acne Treatments
You’ve seen the signs billing lasers at the new millennium cure for acne. But can a laser displace traditional acne treatments like oral contraceptives, antibiotics and even isotretinoin?
Laser fanatics tout these medical devices as obliterators of “acne causing bacteria” and excess oil.
But at recent gathering of the American Academy of Dermatology Edward Seaton, MD, of the Hammersmith Hospital in London, proposed that nonablative laser acne treatments do not kill Propionibacterium acnes (bacteria largely blamed for causing acne) or decrease sebum production.
A Solution to Muscle Weakness
MUSCLE WEAKNESS
If a muscle is not given any work to do each little muscle fibre becomes thinner and the whole muscle begins to lose its strength. Some groups of muscles become weak faster than others. When a footballer has a knee injury his quadriceps, the muscles on the front of his thigh get weak very rapidly. These muscles need exercising early on in order to increase their strength so that he can return to his team as soon as possible. It is also very important that all patients are given exercises to restore muscle strength as soon as possible and so minimise the amount of weakness that occurs. These early exercises, therefore, have to be carefully designed so as to complement the other Physio techniques. Exercises are needed for all the muscle groups in the affected area and they are adapted to suit each patient’s requirements.
Food and Athletes
Cakes, pies, cookies, gravy, stuffing, cakes, pies, candy, cakes, did I mention cakes? Ah, the joy of Christmas! It’s drawing closer by the day and I’ve got a dreadful feeling of joy and horror in my stomach.
The joy is the obvious part, but why the horror? No, it’s not the Christmas shopping that scares the fecal matter out of me, nor the inevitable “do you really have to train on Christmas Day” comment from the wife. No, it’s much simpler than that, although maybe simple is the wrong word; Food. Such a simple word, such a complicated issue.
Variety Is The Spice Of Training
Q – I have been going to the gym for 6 months now, initially I lost weight but now don’t seem to be getting any fitter or losing any more weight. Can you help?
A –This is one of the biggest reasons that people give up on their fitness programme. It can be depressing thinking that all that hard work is getting you nowhere. Don’t despair just yet though, as with some simple changes you can get your training routine going again and get back on the road to achieving your goals.
When we exercise to improve our fitness, or to lose weight, we are putting the body under stress. Just like with any drug it has to be taken in the right amount, take too much and it does bad things, take too little and it has no effect.
Similarly, if we never change the type or dose of exercise we use, the effects start to lessen as our body adapts to it. While all your effort is keeping you healthy and active, if you want to keep improving then varying your training is essential. You might remember the first time you went through your training programme and it felt challenging, does it still feel like that? I’m guessing the answer is probably no.
So, how can you get that essential variety in your workout and restart your fitness campaign with a bang? Adding variety means more than just increasing how far you run or how much weight you are lifting. Remember what happens if you overdose on a drug?
Here are some ideas you can apply to your training programme to add some variety, and more importantly stimulate some changes in that tired old workout routine!
How Many Repetitions Should You Be Doing?
Q – I’ve recently started doing some weight training as part of my exercise routine but am a bit confused about how many repetitions I should do of my exercises, does it make a difference?
A – Absolutely, in fact the amount of repetitions you do for any given exercise is probably one of the most important factors in the success of your training programme, even if you are relatively new to using weights.
One of the most common mistakes that people make with their weight training is failing to change their routine often enough to keep the body changing. This happens because our body adapts to the challenge of a particular routine and no longer needs to change to perform it. By varying the amount of repetitions and sets you do, you can greatly improve results and also keep your workout varied and more interesting.
When you first start out, virtually any repetition range you use will result in some results, it is usually after 3-4 months when people stop seeing any changes. This is way too long to work the same programme and while changing exercises helps with variety, it won’t have the same effect as varying your repetitions.
Bankruptcy – Adding Insult to Illness and Injury
“Debt can feel like the heaviest burden in life.” ~ Suze Orman
Declaring bankruptcy is a very serious action with stressful consequences even beyond the challenges of life before filing for bankruptcy and credit repair after bankruptcy. Unfortunately, this still seems to be the only way out of debt for millions of American families every year.
It is especially shocking that the major cause of bankruptcy in the U.S. is medical bills. And even more shocking is the fact that most of those forced into bankruptcy by medical expenses actually had medical insurance!
How to Cure Anemia Naturally
Those who suffer from Anemia either have a reduced number of red blood cells or a reduced amount of hemoglobin (the component of red blood cells that attaches to oxygen and transports it in the blood). Since there is less oxygen available to the cells in the body, Anemics have less energy to perform normal functions. The most common cause of Anemia is iron deficiency… iron is used to make hemoglobin. Most Anemics are on medication for life. We are interested in fixing the nutritional deficiencies underlying the condition to heal the ailment completely.
Using Blue Light Acne Therapy To Blow Your Zits Away
Did you know that a vast majority of adults, one in twenty in fact, suffer from persistent acne which can prove to be extremely resistant to antibiotics and over-the-counter lotions and potions?
The good thing about suffering on such a large scale often means that (usually) more research studies will be carried out and more and more newer treatments readily become available as time goes on. This is especially the case with acne where we tend to hear about new treatments and over-the-counter products every year.

Blood Type: Functions Beyond Matching for Transfusions?
Researchers in England dug up the bodies of people who had died from the 1665 London plague, and made the startling discovery that most of the people who died had type B blood, and that far fewer people have type B blood now than before the plague. Scientist now must explain why people
with Type B blood were more likely to die from plague.
When a germ gets into your system, you make a protein
called an antibody that attaches to it and kills it. Your body
is never supposed to make antibodies against itself. Your
immunity recognizes a germ by the sugar surfaces on cell
membranes. Type B surface membrane on red cells is the
same as the surface membrane of certain bacteria, including
Yersinia pestis, the flea-borne bacteria that caused the plague.
If you are type B, you cannot make antibodies against type B
surface of cells, because you would destroy all your red blood
cells. If yersinia gets into your bloodstream, your immunity does
not kill it, so it causes blisters and swollen lymph nodes, and
you can go into shock and die.
Botox and Wrinkle Treatments – Do You Need Them To Keep Your Job?
Why do you care about your appearance? Do you look in the mirror and wish you looked younger or better so your partner would find you more attractive? Perhaps you just want to have a skip in your step as you walk down the street feeling fresh and fabulous?
Or is it a little more serious than that?
Are you worried that those laughter lines around your eyes could mean you won’t get that promotion at work, or worse, lose your job altogether?
Panic Attacks – Is Panic Away The Right Way?
It seems that the e-book by Joe Barry called Panic Away is taking readers by surprise at the incredible results it is having on sufferers from around the globe. My question is, as many other Panic Attack sufferers questions are and will be, does Panic Away really work and how does Panic Away work so efficiently when it is just a readable document.
It was once believed by me and many others who would back up my claim that Panic Attacks were something that would stay with us for the rest of our lives. Panic Away and Joe Barry state otherwise. There was a point where I saw no way out and where there appeared to be no logical answers and solutions to this debilitating way of life so many others and I appeared to live. Joe Barry and his e-book Panic Away claim otherwise and I have now investigated this myself. Is Joe Barry’s Panic Away the real McCoy?
Shamanic Healing and Soul Retrieval – Two Year Practitioner Training
The Course consists of the following; Year 1
Weekend 1. Shamanic Journeying
A shaman is a ‘Master of Ecstasy’ (Mercia Eliade). The word ecstasy comes from the Greek – ex-stasis – meaning outside the limited, narrow, trance-state we call ‘normal’ waking reality.
The classical shamanic journey is one of the most profound visionary methods of obtaining hidden knowledge and wisdom. It is a powerful way to facilitate self-transformation, and personal empowerment.
Fat Loss Post Pregnancy
Here is a recent piece that is on the Aegis Training blog, but for those of you who came here first I thought I would post it twice! This article was compiled with the help of nutritional therapist Angela Trisoglio, who can be found for consultations at our studio.
The article itself was a response to a reader question on the website Personal Training on the Net, from a trainer with a client who is struggling to lose abdominal body fat that was acquired during pregnancy.
Still Falling For These Six-Pack Myths?
Open just about any magazine even slightly related to health and fitness and you’ll find some variant or another of ‘six weeks to a six-pack’ or ‘awesome abs’ or ‘core training secrets of the stars’ or the like.
It’s amazing!
It’s as if the whole world is fixated with the abdominal region and will happily sit through pages and pages of ‘samey’ information just to get to the one or two ‘secrets’ that’ll miraculously turn us from fat and flabby to fit and fabby over night.
Is London Fashion Week Promoting The Zero
After banning size 0 models in Madrid and Milan, it was expected for London to keep up the protest, during fashion week. However, organizers of London Fashion Week say they will not ban size zero models if designers persist on using them, but simply ask them to use healthy looking models.
The UK’s average women is a size 12, but more and more young girls are appearing on the catwalk and in the spotlight sporting a size zero figure (an English size 4). If our UK girls are seeing this ultra-slim image in magazines, on TV and on the catwalk, they may begin to doubt their own natural body shapes that they were once comfortable in. Seeing these tiny-framed women wearing designers latest trends, will give our women no other message than ‘it looks good on that size’. Many women may become put off wearing latest trends as they feel it would make them look ‘fat’ compared to the likes of English rose, Lily Cole.
Mind-Body Unity – A Practical Approach
“No problem can be solved from the same consciousness that created it.” -
Albert Einstein
“No one would deny that we ourselves enter as an agency into whatever is attempted and done by us. This is a truism. But the hardest thing to attend to is that which is closest to ourselves, that which is most constant and familiar. And this closest ‘something’ is, precisely, ourselves, our own habits and ways of doing things…
Sciatica Treatment
SCIATICA
is the Latin word for “Pain down the back of the leg” Sciatica is referred pain usually caused by trapping the sciatic nerve in the lower back.
The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back down through the buttocks and along the back of each leg. Sciatica is pain along this nerve and is a relatively common form of back pain and is usually caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve from a herniated or bulging disc. The pain from sciatica can be anything from infrequent and irritating to severe and debilitating. Usually, it affects only one side, the pain radiating through the buttock and down the leg and is often associated with a constant pain on one side of the buttocks, pain in the leg and/or buttock that may be worse when sitting , burning or tingling down the leg, weakness, numbness or difficulty moving the leg or foot or a shooting pain that makes it difficult to stand up. While sciatica can be extremely painful and uncomfortable, it is rare that permanent nerve damage (tissue damage) results. Most pain is due to inflammation and will improve within a period of time. Nerve pain is caused by a combination of pressure and inflammation on the nerve root, and treatment is centred on relieving both of these conditions.
Benefits of Thought Field Therapy in Adapting to Loss of Hearing
Thought Field Therapy can help a considerable number of people who have suffered the trauma of losing their hearing. Often the sudden loss of hearing can result in tremendous stress related to having to make dramatic lifestyle changes and coping with all the new, and often strange, methods of communicating. This can involve not only new technology, but the basic means of chatting with friends and family, shopping, travelling, watching television and the myriad of other activities associated with everyday living. This can be very scary indeed and can create even more stress and anxiety, which may compound the original problem. Whatever the trauma, whether it is associated with hearing loss or any other problem, the TFT Practitioner does not need to know what it is specifically, only the level of anxiety related to it.
Black Tea-Naturally Soothing
A study by University College London (Oct. 2006) revealed that people who drank tea after stressful events were able to de-stress more quickly than those who did not drink tea. The researchers discovered that black tea lowers the levels of cortisol, a harmful stress hormone, by a significant average of 47 percent. No distinction was referenced between decafinated or catinated tea.
Tea is chemically complex—containing catechins, polyphenols, flavonoids, and amino acids, and so far it is not known whether it is a single substance or the synergistic interplay of all its components that are responsible for black tea’s health promoting effects. More studies are planned.
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) and Tendon Injury
TENDON INJURY
A tendon is just a connector, like a piece of string, between the part of the muscle that contracts and the bone to which it attaches. Tendons only need a small amount of nourishment and therefore they only have a minimal blood supply. This means that when a tendon is damaged it doesn’t have a good blood supply to help it to heal quickly. When a tendon is damaged fluid seeps out of torn fibres and causes localised swelling. This works like glue squeezed from a tube; the glue tries to repair the damage and in its enthusiasm sticks everything to everything else. The individual fibres of the tendon which are normally free to glide slightly one on the other become stuck together and are then irritated by the pull of even the slightest contraction in the muscle. It is important to assess what activity or movement causes the pain so that the patient can do this activity and movement as little as possible so as not to aggravate the problem. See: RSI, golfers elbow, Tennis elbow, Supra-spinatus tendinitis, Tenosynovitis.
